    Happy Halloween!

    Postby Freakzilla » 31 Oct 2008 09:31

Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year". Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

    Myths:

On Jan. 1, 1600, the human population was 536,870,911. If the first vampire came into existence that day and bit one person a month, there would have been two vampires by Feb. 1, 1600. A month later there would have been four, and so on. In just two-and-a-half years the original human population would all have become vampires with nobody left to feed on, even if our entire species doubled each month.

    :P

You have a better chance of being hit by a car on a dark street than finding secret razor blades in candies.

Police and medical centers across the country annually take precautions to prevent candy tampering during the Halloween season. Each year, X-ray equipment is overloaded to check Halloween items for harmful objects, such as razors, needles or other objects that might have been placed there to hurt or kill children.

However, few if any threatening foreign objects are found, with the "unfortunate victim" sometimes revealed as the culprit, in search of media attention. Essentially, these precautions are wasting resources and fueling an urban legend, as well as children's fears.

There have been only two confirmed cases of children being killed by poisoned Halloween candy, and in both cases the children were killed intentionally by one of their parents. The best known, "original" case was that of Texan Ronald Clark O'Bryan, who killed his son by lacing his Pixie Stix with cyanide in 1974.

With the exceptions noted above, no child has been killed or seriously harmed by contaminated Halloween candy.

Many people are under the impression that Halloween is the second-busiest retail holiday of year, beaten only by Christmas. In fact, The National Retail Foundation ranks it sixth overall, behind Father's Day, Easter, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and the winter holidays. So, as for the pumpkin-happy holiday offsetting the Dow Jones from its financial debacle, don't count on it.

October is usually considered a vigorous month for heavy spending - between Halloween shopping and cooling weather driving consumers to search for winter gear - but it's shaping up to be a nationwide letdown, according to The Wall Street Journal. Consumers have clung so far to their newly modest spending habits. What's more, this year's Fright Night comes on the heels of a back-to-school shopping season that was considered mostly a bust, the newspaper reported.

There has not been a single case of any child being molested by a convicted sex offender while trick-or-treating.

Foremost, it is fairly implausible that a criminal could molest an elaborately dressed child in costume, outside the front door, in front of numerous witnesses and parents.

The "stranger danger" concern is a relatively recent phenomenon, and the emergence of sex offender laws across the country have resulted in thousands of convicted sex offenders abiding by a strict curfew and not answering their doors to trick-or-treaters on the night of Halloween. However, Georgia, New Jersey and Indiana have recently overturned sex offender laws found to be unduly restrictive, according to JURIST, a Web-based legal news and real-time legal research service.

The fact is there is no evidence that indicates these laws actually make children any safer. In 2007, Human Rights Watch concluded in a report that it is unclear whether sex offender laws "do more harm than good," noting that they might encourage harassment and ostracism of sex offenders who have served their time. In addition, most released sex offenders do not re-offend, contrary to popular belief, and most attacks on children occur in their own home by someone they know.

There is no doubt these special considerations are well-intentioned, but there is no reason to think that sex offenders pose any more of a threat to children on Halloween than at any other time.

I knew that guy. Kid was a brat. Wife was no prize, either.

See, orald ? I told you, they just don't report that kinda thing over here. The Shame Factor kicks in because of the religious unbringings, and the kids mostly keep their mouths shut. So grab that passport & a bag of peanut M&Ms !!

I kinda like this one. I like to go around to people's houses that have not decorated for the holiday and pretend to be a probation officer and/or pissed off, paranoid parent. "Well, maybe you just oughta move. If'n you know what's good for ya."

    Happy Nevada Day!

It's a state holiday here, meaning that, once again, Nevada is the best place to be for a kid who likes Halloween. You get all day to prepare and get excited!

Nevada was admitted to the union on October 31, 1864, as the 36th state. Our motto, "Battle Born" reflects the American Civil War, which was beginning to wind to its somewhat inevitable conclusion.

All government offices and many businesses are closed today. The streets are deserted. It's sort of spooky ... just like Halloween!

I wondered who would be the first Southerner to notice that line. :)

(Could you warn me, though, if the invasion will be out here in the West? You guys can have New England and New York for all I care ...)

I'm from the north, though ... and we pretty much think of Las Vegas as being its own separate state. Hell, many people think of LV as being its own separate planet.

There would be actual joy if southern Nevada were to announce it was seceding from the rest of the state.

I can't swear to the date, but it had to be 83 or 84, at the old Fox Theatre
on South Charleston - I'm thinking this was before Thelma & Louise ....

    in the velvet darkness
    of the blackest night
    burning bright
    there's a guiding star
no matter what ....or.... who you are ....

I'd seen Rocky Horror before, in some big citites where they really put on
a show, so when this young thing said, hey I do Rocky Horror on Saturday
nights, I knew a little about what I was getting into.....

This was the early 80s, Reagan was in his first term, and Vegas was really
booming.... I think Steve had just redone the Golden Nugget downtown,
I'm not sure, the chronology gets a little hazy sometimes ....

anyway, I shredded up a tuxedo jacket, got a brown paper bag & filled it
with rice, toast, a water pistol, a rolled up newspaper, a deck of cards
from the old Silverbird hotel (formerly the Thunderbird), a small flashlight
and two pieces of rancid meatloaf .........

    it's astounding
    time is fleeting
    madness
    takes its toll ...

I was still smoking the ganja back then, and the kids from the UNLV drama club
really did it up - perfect costumes, props, they stuck to the original script for the
most part, but had a few local references as well ... can't seem to remember any
of them, tho ...oh, there was ... uh ... naw.

The Fox Theatre was a dying dinosaur, in the center of an old strip mall from the
60's that was now mostly abandoned - one entire end was used as a warehouse
by a furniture store, the other end was empty. There was only one screen, already
a novelty in those days. (When nickles had bees on them...)

There was a small stage in front of the screen and huge red velvet curtains .....
When the lights would dim and the crowd began chanting "Lips ! Lips ! Lips !"
one kid would jump up and say :
"A long, long, Time ago, in a Galaxy far, far way , God Said: Let there be Lips !"
"And there were Lips, and they were good"

    Janet ?
    Yes, Brad ?
There's been something I've wanted to say .....

I guess the main problem was the nudity and sex in the first
three rows .... somewhere towards the end, in the mid 80s,
that ecstasy stuff started going around .... it's hard to keep
college kids from banging each other in public when they're
on that stuff anyway, but put the girls in fishnets & bustiers,
hell, put the guys in fishnets & heels, plus the sexual
nature of the movie anyway, and well, you've got trouble ....

Whatever happened .... to Fay Wray ?
    That delicate ... satin-draped ... frame .....?
As it clung ... to her thigh ....
How I wanted to cry ...
Because I wanted to be dressed .... just the same ....

It became known as the Coast Guard Incident. Several
weeks before, the poor owner of this struggling theater had
been visited by representitives of the Clark County Sheriff's
Office, and told to keep these kids under control, keep their
clothes on, don't let them smoke dope right there down front ...

They were banned from being up on the stage that first time,
so they did the show standing on the seats of the first three rows ...

The next weekend, I had a plan ....

    My My My
    Muh-Muh-My My My
    My My My
    Myyyyyy ....

I got there early and talked the guy into letting me in.
I'd brought a skein of black yarn and a sign. I knew
there was a microphone stand under the stage, and
taped the sign to it, and ran the black yarn from one
curtain, across the stage, to the other curtain, securing
    it with duct tape.

    The sign read:
    LINE OF MORALITY
Do Not Cross By Order Of
    John Moran, Sheriff

I'm a wild and an untamed Thing
    I'm a bee with a deadly sting

So the kids really got a kick out of the sign. The lights
went down, "Lips ! Lips ! Lips !" filled the darkened
theater, and the switch was flipped that drew back the
    curtains....

To which was attached the yarn, which was attached
to the Line Of Morality sign, which lifted up in the air
about a foot before the weight of the microphone stand
snapped the yarn, and the whole thing crashed to the
    stage.

The kids took this as a Sign From God...and rushed the stage.

Cards for Sorrow .... Cards for Pain .....

The Coast Guard guys were drunk. Bad drunk. Ugly Drunk.
They came in the lobby yelling "Coast Guard !" and slapping
    each other in the face.

During the Time Warp, they mounted the stage, and dropped
their pants. Then they dropped their shorts. Then fourteen
flashlights converged on three naked peckers.

We didn't know there were Sheriff's Deputies in the house ....

    and crawling
    on the planet's face
    some insects
    called the human race

The next weekend the kids were met at the
locked doors to the Old Fox Theatre on South
Charleston, in Las Vegas, Nevada; Sin City, the
Capital of American Vice and Hedonism by the
    owner.

"There'll be no more Rock Horror here, " he said,
this poor short, balding man. "They got a court
order - called it moral indecendcy. In Las Vegas."
He shook his head in disbelief, and the kids just
wandered away, confused and disillusioned about
    America.

Without the revenue from Friday & Saturday midnight
showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show that
old theater soon closed down. It wasn't long after that
the entire mall was bought & sold, demolished. Just
another historic landmark in that ever-booming town,
lost in time, lost in space ......and meaning.

    Happy Halloween, y'all.

That was a great story, Sandrider. :post whore:

I had a lot of fun at the late night science fiction double feature. We always had police there but they did bother us unless we were obvious about.

The back row is the place to be.

I know it's not showing in the same theater I used to haunt but I'm sure it still is somewhere in the metro area.
